The three birds on this urn have deep, ancient meanings. The phoenix was the bird that resurrected itself from its own ashes–a symbol of rebirth. The eagle represents victory and freedom. The crane is immortality. All these are reminders that love is stronger than death.
This urn is part of the carved saltfire series, made from white stoneware and carefully carved into intricate patterns reminiscent of carved ivory. Because salt firing is highly variable, colors are paler or deeper in different parts of the urn.
To calculate whether an urn is large enough, you should figure about 1 cubic inch per pound of living body weight. This urn holds 173 cubic inches. If ashes are partially scattered, or divided amongst loved ones, the urn could accommodate the cremains of a larger individual.
