The design of this small sculptural boat derives from the beautiful boats the Egyptians used on the Nile, models of which they often placed in tombs to assist the dead in their challenging journey through the afterworld.
This little boat can be used as a reliquary, or memorial urn, to hold a small quantity of cremains after most of the ashes have been scattered or divided. It will hold about 8 tablespoons. You could also use it to keep a precious memento such as jewelry or a watch.
The boat was made from white stoneware clay and ornamented with black slip. The rich surface is the result of firing in a salt kiln.
