The House for the Soul series was inspired by ancient Asiatic tomb sculptures of houses. Tombs were furnished with everything a person might need in the afterlife—and a house was often part of this: a home for the soul.
This large sculpture is made of rugged stoneware, brush-ornamented with black slip, and fired in a salt kiln to very high temperatures. It has a commanding presence and is large enough to hold the cremains of up to two individuals. The flower motif derives from wall paintings of ancient Crete, the Minoan culture. The bird is a very old, universal symbol of the spirit.
