dark brown and white, salt fired

This salt-fired large urn is part of the Minoan House series, evoking the feeling of ancient tomb furnishings, which often included houses. Stylized flower patterns were particularly favored in the Minoan culture of Crete, and here they are carved and inlaid with white slip to contrast with the dark clay body.
The feeling is of a beautiful house where the soul will find protection and comfort. The bird–symbol of the spirit–can take flight whenever it wishes.
When calculating capacity of an urn, the rule of thumb is 1 cubic inch per pound of living body weight. This urn is quite large (367 cubic inches) and can hold the cremains of up to two individuals.
